Children’s mouthwash
Frequently Asked Questions about Children’s Mouthwash
Is it recommended for children to use mouthwash?
Mouthwash can be recommended for children if advised by a paediatric dentist and appropriate for their age. It does not replace brushing but complements it. Often suggested for high risk of cavities, sensitive gums or during orthodontic treatment. Not recommended for young children who cannot rinse and spit properly.
From what age is mouthwash recommended for children?
Most paediatric dentistry associations recommend fluoride mouthwash from around 6 years, when children can rinse and spit safely. Younger children risk swallowing it. In high-risk cases, a dentist may prescribe earlier use, under supervision.
What if my child accidentally swallows some mouthwash?
Occasionally swallowing a small amount is usually safe. Frequent or large amounts can cause stomach upset and, in the long term, dental fluorosis. Always supervise use, teach proper spitting, and follow the recommended amount. Seek medical advice if a significant quantity is swallowed.
How often should children use mouthwash? Daily?
Frequency depends on individual needs. Children at high risk of cavities or with braces may use it daily, usually once, preferably after brushing in the evening. Others may only need occasional use. Follow the dentist’s guidance.
Alcohol or alcohol-free?
Always choose alcohol-free children’s mouthwash. Alcohol provides no benefit in preventing cavities and can irritate the mouth. Children’s mouthwashes are alcohol-free and contain safe fluoride levels for their age.
Is mouthwash necessary for all children?
No. Mainly indicated for high risk of cavities, sensitive gums, braces, or dentist recommendation. For other children, good brushing with fluoride toothpaste and flossing as appropriate is sufficient.
What are the benefits of mouthwash?
Strengthens enamel, reduces demineralisation, prevents cavities, improves gum health, and reaches areas difficult to brush, especially with braces. Complements brushing, does not replace it.
How should mouthwash be used correctly?
After evening brushing, use the recommended amount (usually 10 ml), swish for 30–60 seconds, and spit completely. Do not rinse with water or eat/drink for 30 minutes.
Can mouthwash replace brushing?
No. Mouthwash never replaces brushing; it complements enamel protection.
When is mouthwash particularly indicated for children?
For children over 6 with high cavity risk, sensitive gums, orthodontics, or dentist recommendation. Always supervised by an adult.
